Week 2 - Ordering seeds

Time in: 8:00pm
Time out: 10:30pm

Tasks:

1) Looked through seed catalog and ordered 3 varieties of tomatoes (from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds)

2) Discussed and calculated expenses and made a list on what we need

  • 1 Seedling container
  • 1 bag of seed starter mix
  • 1 water timer
  • Drip irrigation supplies for an 8x8 ft space
  • Potting soil for 5 gal. containers

3) Discussed other possible vegetables to plant

  • Eggplant
  • Cucumber
  • Squash
  • Basil

We decided to focus mainly on tomatoes in the garden. We want also to plant tomatillos and cherry tomatoes. The only drawback we ran into is the space we have to plant. We wish to utilize the square-gardening technique. Through this, we will be able to fit approximately 16-20 tomato plants in an 8x8 square foot area. The other veggies will be planted in 5 gallon containers, lining the outside of the area.

Week 1 - Horticulture class

For the spring semester, we decided to join LA Pierce college's Horticulture Projects class. This class can be done on campus, at home or on site. We chose to combine a home vegetable garden project with an academic setting. Being amateur gardeners, we very much appreciate the resources available to us.

Here are a list of our objectives:
- Learn how to successfully grow a vegetable patch (%90 from seed)
- Learn how to install and maintain a drip irrigation system, including using a water timer
- Use organic, no chemical methods for pest control
- Maximize limited space availability for vegetable patch (using square-foot gardening technique and 5 gal containers)
- Learn how to journal and organize the process, create a blog
